When I was a teen, like most teenagers, I thought I understood love. I dated guys, thinking that I understood what romantic love was all about. I dressed up, I poofed my hair, I put on makeup. There was drama, joy, despair, blah, blah, blah, all the usual.
When I was 20 (so young! I think now, looking back) I met someone new. I liked what I saw, so I started to learn more. He didn't play the usual games. He pretty much put it all out in front of me who he was and what he believed in. I could tell that he wanted me to like what I knew about him, but there was also this unfailing steadfastness that said I had to accept the whole package and he wasn't going to change.
The first time he saw me without my hair poofed and make up on he told me that he thought I looked nice, and he really didn't care if I ever wore makeup.
As we grew closer, I learned about one of the great and real meanings of love: acceptance. He didn't have time for putting on airs. He said what he thought, but those thoughts were most often laced with kindness, compassion and thoughtfulness of everyone. He knows what he believes in, but is always willing to learn as much as he can and allow his opinion to be shaped by knowledge.
He also believes in me. Now, with seventeen years of marriage behind us, he still lets me be me. And, to be honest, it took me a while to figure out who that was (actually I am still working on that).
In many regards he is my rock, my strength. He listens when I need it, is a sounding board when it is a necessity to vent, and holds my hand when I need to feel his presence.
The greatest gift I have ever been given is the gift of a loving family that loves me for who I am.
It is astonishing how many people do not have this. They have family members who are absorbed with their own happiness and never take into consideration the feelings or those around them, or their spouse or parent is always trying to change them into something they are not.
Love with acceptance. What a beautiful gift.

10 years ago I lost my husband to suicide do to illness. Since then I met Russ my husband of 5 years. He is totally opposite of my 1st husband. He takes lfe one day at a time and doesn't let it get him down. He is so layed back it is almost scarry. He picks on me and I pick back just for fun. ON JAN 1ST 2012 I suffered a heart attack at the age of 46. I thought it was ingestion at the time and on jan 2nd about 3:30PM my wife encouraged me to go to the emergency room where they discovered I was having a heart attack.I was Air lifted to lacrosse not knowing the outcome. My wife had to make arrangments for our children and get a ride to lacrosse where she whould discover I had a 75% and a 100% blockage on the right side of my heart.which they determined it was to risky to try and fix they decided to treat with med's and a change of life style I could live a healthy life. I truely credit my wife for saving my life that day. If she hadn't forced me to go to the emergecy room that day the out come could have been different. thank you for being strong that week while I was in ICU and making arrangments for the kids while you made several trips to and from lacrosse. I love you for your strenth,endless love and devotion to your family. and you never complained once as at the same time you were recovering from a back injury.

I want to begin by telling my husband thank you for putting up with me especially when I was sick and in the hospital. I had surgery back in october, he took off work to be with me and to take care of our children, it was an unpaid payed leave which was very hard financially. We have gone through some very hard times but we have always stuck together, sometimes I wonder how. The lyrics to Blake Shelton's 'God Gave Me You', pretty much sums up how I feel about my husband. My husband has stuck by my side through the good & bad times (literally). I could not ask for a better husband or father. We have been married 9 years this past October (2011). Together we have 7 children; 2 his, 2 hers, & 3 ours ranging from ages 5-15 years. He is very intelligent & has taught us & continues to teach us; many things. If it wasn't for my husband I don't know where my life would be (I can assume not anywhere good). I am not the same person I was even just a few years ago because of him. He has taught me things I never in my life thought I would do; for example run a chain saw & cut down trees myself (we burn wood). I am now a do-it-yourself kind of person & I owe it all to my husband for being there & teaching me. Not many take the time to get to know him because of his size, but the way I see it is they are the ones missing out on knowing a great person; whom I can guarantee looks at life completely different than any one else.
