Agri-Star Waste

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says that Agri-Star in Postville discharged 250-thousand gallons of untreated food processing waste went into the Postville sewer system. The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports that wastewater, including blood from the beef processing facility, ended up in Williams Creek. Postville city staff discovered the problem back on March 2nd and 3rd after noticing an unusual "cleaning product" smell in the water treatment plant. They diverted the waste away from Williams Creek on March 4th thru the 7th and were able to get ammonia levels back to the normal range. Full recovery at the plant could take up to a month.
