Dundee, Iowa---Backbone State Park will be conducting a special antlerless deer management hunt December 7th and 8th, 2024. 200 deer tags are available and there will a limit of 75 hunter participating in the hunt. To be eligible to participate in the Backbone Deer Management Hunt, applicants must be residents of Iowa, must attend one of the two safety meetings, must be at least 10 years of age, (hunters 10-15 years of age must be accompanied by a licensed adult), and possess a Backbone special deer management hunt license. A general shotgun season license is not valid in the park hunt. The special management tags are not valid in the Backbone Forest and adjacent public hunting area.
The first safety meeting will take place on Wednesday, October 9th, at 7:00pm. The second meeting will be on Saturday, October 19th, at 10:00am. Both meetings will be at the Backbone Auditorium which is located near the north end of the park. After the safety meeting, participants will be able to purchase the special deer hunt licenses at Nading’s Service and Sporting at 201 Commercial Street in Strawberry Point, Iowa.
Legal firearms for the general deer seasons are also allowed for the Backbone deer hunt.
Special deer population management hunts are used to manage deer numbers to protect vegetation from overgrazing, to maintain healthier deer numbers, to help lessen deer-vehicle collisions and help reduce crop damage on surrounding crops.
