An Edgewood teen was charged after crashing a car in a ditch, then leaving the scene. At 1:30 am Sunday, the Delaware County Sheriff's Office was informed of an abandoned vehicle in the ditch along Iowa Highway 38. The responding deputy found a silver Chevrolet Impala was located in the west ditch. Tracks on the shoulder of the roadway showed where the vehicle had been traveling southbound on Iowa Highway 38 when it drove on to the shoulder of the road and then down in to the ditch. The car continued driving south through the ditch and struck a cement culvert and then a No Passing sign. The vehicle came to rest facing west into the field. The incident caused disabling damage to the vehicle and driver's side airbag was deployed. There were several open containers of alcohol located inside the car. Contact was then made with the registered owner, 18-year-old Avery Vaske. Avery, the only occupant of the car, initially reported he swerved to miss a deer and went into the ditch but later admitted he had been drinking alcohol and then lost control. Avery was charged with failure to maintain control.
