Driftless Area Gravel Challenge Results
VCTC (Vested Citizens Taking Control) and the Driftless Area Gravel Challenge team would like to thank the City of Elkader for your generous hospitality at the 3rd annual Driftless 100 Gravel Bike Race held at Founders Park on April 30. Over 120 cyclists registered for the event, and inclement weather saw sixty-six cyclists finish the race. Cyclists from across the region battled challenging terrain in windy, cold, and wet conditions. Many participants traveled from Chicago, Milwaukee, the Twin Cities, and other distant areas with the furthest traveler joining us from Ontario, Canada! All riders were full of compliments when asked about their experience in Northeast Iowa. Many race participants commented on Elkader’s historic beauty and the welcoming community residents.
Event Host, Mat Fassbinder and the Driftless 100 team put together another well-organized fun event that continues to grow rapidly. Riders were excited about the difficulty of the course and the quality of gravel road conditions (Thank you Clayton County Secondary Roads Crews!). Elkader law enforcement escorted the groups to their designated routes, while local EMS teams from Elkader, Volga, and Garber insured participants were safe on their 100-mile, 50-mile, and 25-mile journeys through our gravel rollercoaster hills. $1,800 was donated back to local area EMS crews for assisting with the event.
The 25-mile distance had 19 finishers and the leader board showed the top three finishers as Weslie Anderson in 1:55, Daniel Lee 2:06, and Ross Lemery 2:06. The 50-mile distance had 28 finishers and the leader board was Ian Hutchinson 3:39, Eric Semianczuk 3:46, and Keith Snoop 3:54. The 100-mile distance had 19 finishers and the leader board had Henry Raether 7:15, Anthony Cellinger 7:22, and Chase Cubbage 7:24 finishing with impressive course record times given the weather conditions.
