Elgin Man Arrested on Possession of Meth and Numerous Other Charges, Westgate Man Apprehended After Walking Away from Residential Facility

On 8-12-26 at approximately 9:30 a.m. the Fayette County Sheriff's Office received a report of a male subject passed out in his vehicle near the pond at Gilbertson Park. Upon deputies’ arrival contact was made with the male driver who was identified as being Justin M. Schomacker, 34 of Elgin. Upon further investigation Schomacker was found to be in possession of methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia, and a firearm. A check revealed that Schomacker was a convicted felon banning him from possessing a firearm. It was also discovered that the firearm had been reported stolen. Schomacker was arrested and transported to the Fayette County Jail where he was charged with Possession of a firearm as a felon, Trafficking in stolen firearms, possession of methamphetamine 3rd of Subsequent all class “D” felonies. Schomacker was also charged with possession of drug paraphernalia (simple misdemeanor). After further investigation on August 12, 2026, at approximately 1:35 PM, the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office executed a Search Warrant at a residence on Washington Street in Elgin. After a search of the residence, illegal items were located. Justin Michael Schomacker, age 34 of Elgin, was arrested and charged with Control of a Firearm/Offensive Weapon by Felon (D Felony). This Search Warrant stems from the previous incident. Schomacker is at the Fayette County Jail and awaits an initial appearance from a Magistrate Judge. This incident remains under investigation and more charges are pending. The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Fayette County Conservation and the Iowa DNR.
On 8-12-26 at approximately 3:00 p.m. The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office received a tip of the where abouts of Jacob Wiiliam Jeanes, 37 of Westgate who had been placed on escape status from the West Union Residential facility on 8-11-26 near Westgate. When the Deputies arrived, Jeanes got into a vehicle and when the deputy attempted to take Jeanes into custody, Jeanes placed the vehicle into reverse. The deputy jumped out the way to avoid being struck by the vehicle. Jeanes drove through the bean field, and the truck was located abandoned in a shed just down the road a short time later. After searching for several hours using, the Iowa State Patrol air unit and drones Jeanes was later located and taken into custody. Jeans was wanted out of Fayette County for escape from custody class “D “ felony, bond $5000.00 and a probation violation with a no bond hold. Jeans was additionally charged with assault on a police officer with a weapon class “C” felony. No one was injured in this incident The Fayette County Sheriff's Office was assisted by the Iowa State Patrol and the Oelwein Police Departments Drone.
On August 11, 2026, the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office arrested Justin Linus Kuennen, age 45 of Waucoma, on a valid Fayette County Warrant for Violation of a No Contact Order (Simple Misdemeanor). Justin was transported to the Fayette County Jail where he is being held on a $500 cash or surety bond and awaits an initial appearance.
On August 10, 2026, at approximately 8:42 AM, the Fayette County Sheriff's Office received a report of a vehicle in the ditch. After further investigation, it was determined that Tony Joann Poulin, age 37 of Elgin, was traveling west bound in a Blue 2019 Ford Fusion SE when a deer entered the traveled portion of the roadway. Poulin reported no injuries. The Ford sustained approximately $1500 in damages. This accident remains under investigation.
