On May 4th, 2025, at approximately 2:22 a.m., the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from a residence in Garnavillo for a male subject who was out of control. Deputies from the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office arrived in the area to attempt to locate the male as he had fled the residence prior to arrival. Deputies located him approximately two and a half hours later in Garnavillo and took him into custody. While canvassing the area for him, deputies observed vehicles with damage to them on South Monroe Street.
Over the past two days, officers with the Garnavillo Police Department have compiled additional reports of damage to property. Physical and video evidence was secured from around town, and enough evidence was procured to file additonal criminal charges. Henry Berns, 32, of Garnavillo is being charged by the Garnavillo Police Department with Criminal Mischief in the 2nd Degree (a Class D Felony) and Burglary in the 3rd Degree (an Aggravated Misdemeanor). This is in addition to charges already filed by deputies with the Sheriff’s Office. Damage caused by Berns has exceeded $7,000 and continues to grow. If you noticed damage which occurred to your property between the late night hours of Saturday (May 3rd, 2025) into the early morning hours of Sunday (May 4th, 2025), please contact the police department so that we may assist you. It would seem that all damage has been concentrated to the east side of Main Street. If you have video systems, please check them during this time frame. If you have anything that you think could be of use, please contact us.
I would like to thank the cooperation from the community in providing video and witness statements. The filing of these charges would not have been possible without you.
