When deputies arrived, they learned, Mary Hofer-Furlong, 56, of Cuba City, was driving her 2018 Chevrolet Colorado south on Hwy 81 near Blockhouse Road, when she came up behind a line of vehicles that had slowed due to some congestion on the highway. Furlong slowed to a stop and when she looked in her rear view mirror she saw another vehicle coming up behind her. Conner Hill, 18, of Cuba City, was driving south on Hwy 81 with 2 juvenile passengers. As Hill crested the top of the hill, he reported that he looked to speak with a passenger, and by the time he looked back he was unable to stop in time and he crashed in the the rear of Furlong's vehicle.

All parties involved were wearing seat belts. The front airbags deployed in Hill's vehicle. All occupants in Hill's vehicle were transported to Southwest Health in Platteville. Furlong refused transport.

Furlong's vehicle was towed from the scene by Donnies Tire of Dickeyville. Hill's vehicle was towed from the scene by Precision Auto of Platteville.
