On September 13, 2024, a report was made to our agency involving a fraud scam using the likeness of local law enforcement agencies. Scammers will contact you disguising their phone number as the phone number of your local law enforcement agencies, and will identify as a law enforcement official. The scammer will tell citizens they have missed jury duty or have fines that need to be paid. The scammer will then direct the victim to wire transfer money through companies like Green Dot which is available through Wal-Mart or other businesses. Once the money is transferred, it appears to be going to an encrypted overseas account, making it hard to recover any sent money.
If you get a call like this, please do not provide any information to the scammer and hang up. Remember to report all fraud activity to the website https://reportfraud.ftc.gov/, and contact your local law enforcement agency. It is also suggested that citizens freeze their credit through the credit bureaus to avoid any loans or credit cards being taken out in their names by scammers. Scammers are going to continue to think of new ways to take advantage of you, please protect yourself by freezing your credit, not providing personal information, and using secure passwords on all online accounts.
