On September 11, 2021 at approximately 8:17 pm the Grant County Sheriff's Office was notified of a two vehicle crash at the intersection of Hwy 129 and Lincoln Rd located in the Township of South Lancaster. Paul Adams, age 63 from rural Lancaster, was operating his McCormink MTX120 tractor pulling a hay wagon loaded with several large square bales southbound on Hwy 129. Adams was stopped in the southbound lane waiting for northbound traffic to pass so he could make a left turn onto Lincoln Rd. At the same time Tristan Legrand, age 26 from Hazel Green, was also traveling southbound Hwy 129 in his 2015 Volkswagen Passat. Legrand's vehicle struck the rear of the hay wagon and became wedged underneath it. Legrand was not wearing his seatbelt. Extrication, transport, and lifesaving measures were attempted but unfortunately Legrand succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash and passed away at Grant Regional Health Center. Adams was not injured in the crash. The Sheriff's Officer was assisted by Lancaster EMS, Lancaster Fire Department, Lancaster Police Department, and Wisconsin State Patrol Crash Reconstruction Unit. The vehicle and hay wagon were removed by Bennett's Towing of Lancaster. Insufficient lighting is suspected as a possible factor in the crash. The matter is still under investigation. This is the third fatal crash in Grant County in 2021.
