LaVerne George Berns of Manchester

LaVerne George Berns, 82, of Manchester, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, at Maple Crest Manor in Fayette. He was born on September 29, 1943, in Lake City, Iowa, the son of Herman and Lillian (Bierl) Berns. He was a graduate of Pocahontas High School and honorably served in the United States Air Force.


On April 8, 1967, LaVerne was united in marriage to Kathleen Albrecht at Sacred Heart Church in Pocahontas. Three children were born to this union. LaVerne worked at the telephone company where he started climbing poles and worked his way up to management. During his time at the telephone company, they moved several times and eventually settled in Manchester in 1996. After Kathleen’s death, Laverne moved to Fayette in May of 2025. Laverne enjoyed walking the neighborhood, feeding the dogs, fishing, playing guitar, building model railroads and detailing cars.


Survivors include his children, Steve (Leanne) Berns of West Union, David (Barb) Berns of Ankeny, and John (Bev) Berns of Decorah; five grandchildren, Charlie, Emily, Mary, Shana and Brandon; numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews; and sister-in-law Inez Berns.


LaVerne was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Kathleen in 2024; and two brothers Randy Berns and Jim Berns.

Mass of Christian Burial: 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, December 9, 2025, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Manchester, Iowa, with Reverend Gabriel Anderson officiating.


Visitation: 3:00-7:00 p.m., Monday, December 8, 2025, at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Manchester, Iowa. Friends may also call on Tuesday at the church from 9:30-10:30 a.m.


Scripture Service: 2:15 p.m., Monday, December 8, 2025, at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Manchester, Iowa.
