Montauk 150th Celebration

Montauk Historic Site in Clermont is Turning 150!

Come celebrate with us on September 28th.

CLERMONT –  150 years ago, in 1874, William and Anna Larrabee began construction of their home on top of the hill overlooking the Turkey River Valley at Clermont. Here they raised 7 kids, cared for 11 grandkids, and ran an operating farm until the death of their last daughter in 1965. William Larrabee became governor of Iowa in 1886, and was known nationally for his political views on prohibition and railroad regulation. The Larrabees were philanthropic, and their impact on the area can still be felt today.

Montauk will be celebrating its 150th with a birthday event on Saturday, September 28th  from 12:00-4:00. Activities are planned for the whole family, so stop up to enjoy all or part of the day. The main house will be open to walk-through and include behind the scene areas such as the attic and basement. The caretaker’s house that sits on the property will also be open for walk-throughs. Lois Jellings, who worked at Montauk in 1943 will be here to talk to guests about what Montauk was like then.

At 1:00 there will be a living history program by OJ Fargo about Civil War Soldiers in Iowa. There will also be carriage rides, brown swiss cows, piano music, lawn games, kids activities, and birthday cake.

Come help us celebrate this important anniversary!
