A Monticello man is dead after being shot early Tuesday morning. On Tuesday, November 7th, 2023 at approximately 7:29, Monticello Police were dispatched to Fareway Meat and Grocery at 420 North Farley Street in Monticello for the report of a subject who had been shot. The male victim, identified as 48-year-old Aaron McAtee of Monticello, who was an employee of Fareway, had been outside of the store near the loading dock when he was shot in what appears through the investigation to be a random act of violence. McAtee was transported to the University of lowa Hospitals and Clinics where he succumbed to his injuries.
During the course of the investigation, 38-year-old Nathan Russell of East Dubuque, Illinois was identified as a person of interest. Area Law Enforcement began an active search for Russell who was later located in Hopkinton by a Delaware County Deputy as a result of the attempt to locate information. While attempting to take Russell into custody, Russell failed to comply with the directions from the Deputy who subsequently discharged his
firearm in the attempt to detain Russell. Russell was transported to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics with gunshot injuries. The Delaware County Deputy has been placed on critical incident leave pending the continued investigation. No active threat to the public is anticipated as a continued result of this incident. The investigation remains ongoing in partnership with the lowa Division of Criminal Investigation, Jones County Sheriff's Office, and the Delaware County Sheriff's Office. The incidents are being reviewed by the Jones County Attorney's Office and the Delaware County Attorney's Office.
