From the Waukon Police Department

Scam Alert***

One of our officers received this text message. It's obviously a scam for one or more of the following reasons:

1. The phone number appears to have a foreign country code.

2. Notice the typo "North iowa State..." Grammatical and spelling errors are important to note in all texts that are alleged to come from a professional agency or organization.

3. Iowa codes do not follow the coding method used in this text message. Google "Iowa Code 15C-16.003" to verify.

4. Pay close attention to URLs (web addresses). The top-level domain is the .com, .org, gov, etc in a web address. In this one, they do put .gov to throw the receiver off but notice that there's a .icu after the .gov in this address. This directs you to a website that is not affiliated with a government agency.

We received a report from a local business indicating that they received a call from someone impersonating an employee of the Waukon Police Department. The caller wanted the employee to go somewhere quiet to talk.

If you ever receive a call from someone identifying themselves as a Waukon Police Department employee and you’re skeptical or uncomfortable, hang up and call our office directly. You can also request to meet the officer in person to assure that the call is legitimate.

From the Prairie du Chien Department

People are getting fake Wisconsin DMV texts saying you owe money. It's a scam. Hundreds of people sitting in DMV's all over the state waiting for "Now serving D103 at window number 6." There are not DMV employees with the time to be sending out special text messages...

Do not fall victim...go to the nearest location, they will get you served in the next 15 minutes to 4 hours.

No offense should be taken by any DMV employees anywhere. You love you, so much that we'd like to be moved ahead of any line we ever take part in.
