Shooting Investigation

November 22, 2021 Update

The Grant County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate a shooting incident which occurred on November 19th at approximately 3:30 a.m. at 131 North Main Street in the Village of Potosi. As the Grant County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigation Unit works on the investigation, some details have emerged. The female victim, 37 year old Megan Breuer was at her residence, when 47 year old Aaron Osthoff, of Dubuque, IA came to her residence in the early morning hours of November 19th. Breuer and Osthoff were known to each other and the extent of their relationship is still being determined. It appears Osthoff forcibly entered the residence, at which time a call was made to 911 by Breuer. Osthoff made contact with Breuer and ultimately shot Breuer in the neck/head area before turning the gun on himself. Osthoff was declared deceased at the scene by the Grant County Coroner and Breuer is currently in stable condition.

In the early morning hours of November 19, 2021, at approximately 3:30 a.m., the Grant County Communications Center received a 911 call from the north main street area in the Village of Potosi. It was an open line at the time of the call, and the dispatcher could hear voices that sounded like an argument of some type was occurring. Grant County deputies were dispatched to the area on north main street, north of the intersection with County U.

Deputies on scene checked several residences until they narrowed it down to one. As they were standing outside the residence, they heard a gunshot and a woman's scream, and another gunshot followed shortly after. The deputies entered the residence and ultimately located a 37-year-old female victim with a gunshot wound and a male subject with a gunshot wound. The male subject was deceased, and the female victim was transported by Potosi EMS to Grant Regional and later air-lifted to UW Madison.

The Grant County Sheriff's Office is actively investigating this incident, but it has been determined there is no threat to the public due to this incident.

Once more details are learned and families are notified, the Sheriff's Office will release additional information. The Grant County Sheriff's Office is being assisted by the Grant County Coroner's Office and the Wisconsin State Crime Lab.
