Johnsons Selected for Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame



Greg & Carol Johnson of Elgin were inducted into the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame during a ceremony at the 4-H Exhibits Building at the Iowa State Fair on Sunday, August 23. Inductees from across the state were honored for their outstanding service and dedication to 4-H.

When Carol was in fourth grade, she was invited to join 4-H, but at the time it didn’t interest her—it was an all-girls club, and she was a farm girl at heart. By junior high, that changed when she joined the Volga Valley Feeders 4-H Club, where boys and girls participated together. There, Carol found her passion. She showed Ayrshire dairy cattle, earning champion honors at the county fair, and also completed a variety of non-livestock projects.

After graduating high school, Carol attended NICC to study dairy herd management. She later returned home to farm with her dad and became a leader of the Volga Valley Feeders 4-H Club. During this time, she met her husband, Greg. Although Greg had not been involved in 4-H growing up, he quickly embraced it alongside Carol.

Married in 1989, Greg and Carol knew 4-H and the Clayton County Fair would be central to their family. They welcomed two sons, Jarrett and Kenny, who both joined 4-H at a young age through the Marion Happy Hustlers, starting as Clover Kids. Carol once again stepped into a leadership role, and both boys remained active in 4-H through high school.

The Clayton County Fair is especially meaningful to the Johnson family, serving as a yearly reunion with friends old and new. Greg, Carol, and their son Kenny all serve on the Fair Board. Carol is always ready to help—whether checking in livestock, assisting with shows, or announcing at the livestock auction.

Their behind-the-scenes dedication helps make the fair a success year after year. In 2020, Carol was honored as the Clayton County 4-H Alumni Member, recognizing her lifelong commitment and impact. The Johnson family continues to support the 4-H program and the Clayton County Fair.

A record 50 exhibitors from 18 counties brought 804 exhibits to the 2026 Iowa 4-H Horticulture Show at the Iowa State Fair, overcoming a challenging growing season to showcase their skills.


Thirteen Iowa 4-H members were honored with International Harvester Awards at the Iowa State Fair for outstanding restoration, photography, art and display projects celebrating agricultural history and hands-on learning.
