Clayton County Schools Visit NICC Dairy Center for Iowa’s Dairy Story Program

During April and May, 145 Clayton County students participated in Iowa’s Dairy Story program at the NICC Dairy Center in Calmar. Central Elementary fourth graders visited on April 16, followed by Clayton Ridge third graders on April 28. MFL Mar-Mac second grade classes completed the series with their visit on May 21.

The NICC Dairy Center is a working dairy farm that integrates education, research, and hands-on learning opportunities. During their visits, students explored more than 100 years of dairy history, learned about the nutritional benefits of dairy products, visited the Hall of Breeds, and gained insight into a cow’s digestive system. A guided tour of the farm provided an up-close look at the animals and daily farm operations.

One of the highlights of the visit was the Milk Cart Quiz, an interactive game that tested students’ dairy knowledge. The experience concluded on a sweet note, as students made and enjoyed homemade ice cream—an activity that quickly became a favorite.
