Effigy Mounds National Monument Announces Upcoming Programs

HARPERS FERRY, Iowa – Effigy Mounds National Monument plans to host a variety of interpretive programs in April and May.
Golden Eagles Club presentations
The park’s Golden Eagles Club will have its last presentations in April. All presentations are at 10 a.m. in the visitor center.
• April 16 – Join park staff to learn about the Three Sisters and pre-contact period agriculture in the Driftless area. Participants can take home three sister seeds to plant in their own gardens.
• April 23 – Join park ranger Brian Gibbs for a mindfulness walk on the Yellow River Boardwalk. Earth Day Junior Ranger Day
• April 26 10 a.m. -2 p.m. – Join park rangers from Effigy Mounds National Monument and Black Hawk Park in a variety of hands-on activities. Earn your Effigy Mounds National Monument junior ranger badge and your National Park Service Angler junior ranger badge.
Full Moon Hike to Fire Point
• May 1 8 p.m. – Join a park ranger on a beautiful evening hike and experience the full moon over the mounds and the Mississippi River.
Migratory Bird Day
• May 2 10 a.m. – Join local birder Dennis Kirschbaum for a birding adventure on the Yellow River Boardwalk. The entire path is paved or on a boardwalk.
• May 9 10 a.m. – Join park staff for a family birding walk. This walk will take the same path as May 2 but will be geared to young birders. Visitors can also participate in a variety of hands-on activities to learn more about migratory birds in the visitor center 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Historic Preservation Day

• May 30 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Come join park staff and community organizations to celebrate the history of the Driftless Area and its long-term commitment to conservation. Learn about efforts to preserve other mound groups in the area and other preservation projects.
Effigy Mounds National Monument preserves prehistoric American Indian burial and ceremonial mounds, including some in the shape of animals. The monument is located three miles north of Marquette, Iowa, and 22 miles south of Waukon, Iowa, on HWY 76 and is one of 430+ national park sites.
