Effigy Mounds National Monument Announces Upcoming Programs
HARPERS FERRY, Iowa - The public is invited to join a park ranger on a special Super Moon/Harvest Moon guided hike on October 6, 2025, starting at the visitor center parking lot at 5:30 p.m.
The guided hike is scheduled to go to Fire Point to observe the harvest moon. The hike will take place even if the weather is cloudy.
October 13-17, 2025 National Fossil Week
A special exhibit on fossils will be available during normal visitor center hours 9:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
October 20-24, 2025 National Bat Week
Visitors are invited to learn about bats, bat conservation, and do a craft during normal visitor center hours 9:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
October 23, 2025 Lecture on Paleontological Resources at Effigy Mounds National Monument
Visitors are invited to join Dr. Justin Tweet, Paleontology Program Paleontologist and Scientist in Park intern E Vigil to learn more about research and preservation of paleontological resources in the park.

For the closing of the 75th anniversary year, rangers will guide hikes as part of the hiking challenge.

3:00 p.m. Sny Magill (1 mile, flat, 12 miles south of park visitor center)

9:00 a.m. Marching Bears (4 miles round trip – elevation; meet at day use area south of
visitor center)
2:00 p.m. Heritage Addition (4 miles round trip – flat)
October 28, 2025 Lecture on the Treaties of Prairie Du Chien
Dr. Joshua Wachuta, Mellon Humanities Fellow, American Conservation Experience and National Park Service Volunteer in Park, previews his digital humanities exhibit on the geography and long-term legacies of US-Indigenous Treaties in the Upper Midwest.
