Evelyn Irene Schuhmacher, 93, of Strawberry Point, was born February 6, 1932, on the Johnson Family farm in Marshall Wisconsin, passed away peacefully on January 8, 2026 at her home surrounded by family. The daughter of John and Evelyn (Chadwick) Johnson she was the eighth child out of her nine siblings, seven brothers and one sister. Evelyn attended school at the one room Pyburn school house from 1st thru 8th grade, then completed her studies and graduated from Marshall High school. She married and become a mother of seven. Later divorced, Evelyn raised her seven children on her own.
Evelyn built a strong foundation for herself and her children by her perseverance and hard work. Along with being a mother, she took on cleaning and babysitting jobs to then later become a custodian at Starmont Community School District for 23 years before retiring. After retirement she worked as a child care provider for many years at the Berry Tender Child Care Center in Strawberry Point.
Evelyn was truly the backbone of her family. Her children and grandchildren could always expect a warm welcome, with goodies and nice meal while enjoying her tell stories of her childhood. Especially stories about how her siblings would walk through Perkles pasture to attend school. She and her sister would pretend they were “city ladies” and strolled by each other down their lane. Evelyn often shared the story of how she was the only one in her whole family who had contracted Scarlet Fever and survived. No matter the story, it always ended with full body laughs and sore cheeks from smiling.
Evelyn was a remarkable and honest woman with incredible wit. She was proud of her children and the families they created. She will forever be missed but forever in our hearts. Survivors include five children, Peggy (Kim) Kramer of Lake City, Nancy Shaw of Waterloo, Keith (Pamela) Schuhmacher of Strawberry Point, Randall (Rose) Schuhmacher of Troy Mills, and Jane (Ray) Pope of Strawberry Point; two sons-in-law, Greg Lyons of Cedar Falls and Leland (Michele) Adams of Pella; 21 grandchildren, Rebecca Lyons, Mark (Alissa) Lyons, Kari (John) Hanks, Mark (Andreau) Kramer, Kristen (Josh) Sample, Nick (Tina) Schuhmacher, Alicia Rogers, Adrienne Bone, Jason (Joelle) Schuhmacher, Brett (Abbie) Schuhmacher, Seth (Stephanie) Schuhmacher, Shane Schuhmacher, Samira (Bo) Yearous, Faviola (Doug) Bishop, Derek (Jennifer) Adams, Jordan (Abbie) Adams, Ethan (Kelley) Stoen, Katelyn (Jake) Bass, Jackson Pope, Andrew (Chrissy) Pope, and Nick Pope; 39 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild on the way; and many nieces and nephews.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; two daughters, Susan Lyons and Kathleen Adams; son-in-law, Michael Shaw; seven brothers; one sister; and great-granddaughter, Jenna Schuhmacher.
Evelyn’s family wants to extend their gratitude to the staff at Care Initiatives of Manchester Iowa especially Teresa, Tammy, Paige, Lauren, Vicki, and Louise for their incredible care.
