Farmersburg woman seriously injured in semi-car crash in Clayton County

On May 28, 2026, at approximately 3:51 p.m., the Clayton County Communications Center received a report of a semi-versus-car crash at the intersection of Highway 18 and Highway 52 in rural McGregor.
Upon arrival, Clayton County Sheriff’s deputies determined that a 2023 Freightliner semi operated by Edward Kruse, 78, of Cresco, was traveling eastbound on Highway 18 when a silver 2013 Chrysler 300 operated by Susan Henkels, 61, of Farmersburg, was traveling westbound on Highway 18 and failed to yield while making a left turn.
The semi and passenger car collided, pushing the Chrysler 300 into a white 2018 Lexus RX350 operated by Christine Smith, 52, of Vinton who was stopped at the stop sign.
Henkels was airlifted from the scene in serious condition. Kruse and Smith were uninjured in the crash.
Assisting the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office at the scene were Monona Ambulance Service, Mar-Mac Ambulance Service, Monona Fire Department, Monona Police Department, Iowa State Patrol, Gundersen Air 2, Milo’s Towing, and Sautter’s Towing.
