Fayette County One-Vehicle Crash; Pickup vs Tractor Collision

On March 16th, 2026, at approximately 4:07PM, the Fayette County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call of a motor vehicle accident near 45th St. and R Ave. A Fayette County Deputy responded to the scene and located a 2020 silver Volkswagen Passat in the ditch with all airbags deployed after it had struck a tree. Upon investigation, it was learned that the driver, 21 year old Dalton Ray of Oelwein, lost control due to weather conditions and exited the roadway, then striking a tree. No injuries were reported, and the vehicle sustained around $10,000 in damage.  Ray was cited for Failure to Maintain Control. The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Oelwein Fire Department, Mercy Oelwein Ambulance and Midwest Collison.

 

On March 16th, 2026, at approximately 5;39 PM, The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office received report of a 2-vehicle accident near the intersection of Golden Road & F Ave, Elgin. Upon Deputy arrival, it was determined that Lowell Houg 66 of Elgin was driving his silver 2018 Ram 1500 Rebel westbound on Golden Road when he attempted to pass a farm tractor. The farm tractor, a green 1997 John Deere 7810 driven by Ben Gibson 20 of Elgin, was attempting to turn left from Golden Road into a field drive when the two vehicles collided. No injuries were reported from the accident. The silver 2018 Ram 1500 Rebel sustained approximately $7,500.00 in damages. The 1997 John Deere 7810 was not damaged. Fayette County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Elgin EMS and Elgin Fire during this incident. The accident remains under investigation.
