Oelwein Police Release Information on Accident and Three Arrest Incidents

At 3:30pm on September 1, 2026, Oelwein Police responded to a report of a single-vehicle hit and run accident in the 800 block of 2nd Ave SE, where witnesses stated a black SUV struck and knocked over an electrical/utility pole and then left the area.  The vehicle, a black 2003 Chevrolet Suburban, was quickly located in the parking lot of Oelwein High School.  The driver, a 15-year-old male juvenile, was also located.  Initial estimates of damages were $6,000 to the vehicle and $2,000 to the utility pole.  The juvenile driver was assigned fault for the accident and was cited for Striking Fixtures Upon a Highway.  Oelwein Police were assisted by Alliant Energy.

At 10:39am on September 2, 2026, Oelwein Police responded to reports of a fight at Oelwein High School.  As a result, a 15-year-old female juvenile was charged with Assault - Simple Misdemeanor and Disorderly Conduct - Simple Misdemeanor.  The guardians of the juvenile have been notified, and the matter has been referred to Juvenile Court.

At 5:46pm on September 3, 2026, Oelwein Police arrested Eli Robert Wayss, 21, of Oelwein, in the 10 block of E Charles St.  Wayss was arrested on a Fayette County warrant for an original charge of Indecent Exposure (Public Masturbation) - Serious Misdemeanor.

On August 31, 2026, Oelwein Police filed charges on two male juveniles, one 9-year-old and one 11-year-old, regarding an incident at the Oelwein Family Aquatics Center that occurred on August 7, 2026, where officers responded to reports of two juveniles breaking into the pool after it was closed.  It was also discovered that several windows had been broken prior to officers' arrival.  Each juvenile was charged with Trespass Causing $300 or More in Damage - Serious Misdemeanor.  The guardians of the juveniles have been notified, and the matter has been referred to Juvenile Court.
