Sumner man charged with Possession with Intent to Deliver Meth, Fayette County Deputy injured in car-deer accident and more

On 6-28-26, at approximately 11:15 PM, a Fayette County Sheriff's Deputy conducted a traffic stop near the intersection of W Avenue and 100th St., Westgate IA.  After an investigation, a probable cause search was conducted on the vehicle.  During a search, a distribution amount of methamphetamine was found under the passenger seat which was seized.  Marijuana was also found and seized in the suspect vehicle.  Daryl Milton Jones, 59 of Sumner, was arrested and charged with Possession With Intent to Delivery Methamphetamine, a Class B Felony and Possession of a Controlled Substance 3rd Offense-Marijuana, a Class D Felony.  Jones was taken into custody and transported to Fayette County Jail, where he awaited initial appearance. 



On May 28th, 2026, at 8:44PM, the Fayette County Sheriff's Office received a report from an on-duty deputy that he had struck a deer on O Ave. north of Randalia.  The Iowa State Patrol was called to investigate the accident.  Upon investigation, it was learned that 29-year-old Deputy Andrew Terrones, of Fayette, was responding to an emergency call when a deer ran in front of him, colliding with the 2023 Dodge Durango.  Deputy Terrones was transported to Palmer hospital by Fayette Ambulance to be treated for minor injuries.  The Dodge Durango was considered a total loss.  


On June 26th, 2026, at approximately 2:44 PM, James Paul Seefried (age 41) of Fayette was taken into custody for driving while barred. James was transported to the Fayette County Jail where he was held for his initial appearance.

 

On June 27, 2026 at approximately 11:10 PM the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office received report of a female standing on the shoulder of Highway 18 west of West Union.  While the Deputy was searching for the female it was learned a passerby gave the female a ride to the West Union Police Department where she reported being involved in a domestic disturbance.  Deputies investigated the incident and later arrested 31-year-old Benjamin Burkhart of Hawkeye and transported him to the Fayette County Jail.  Burkhart was charged with Domestic Abuse Assault (simple misdemeanor) and False Imprisonment (serious misdemeanor).  The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the West Union Police Department.

 

On June 28th at approximately 1:53 PM, Fayette County Deputies responded to an accident near the intersection of O Avenue and Hwy 18. Upon investigation it was learned that Benjamin Burkhart, age 31 of Hawkeye, lost control of his vehicle and went into the ditch. Burkhart was taken to Gunderson Palmer Hospital in West Union by private vehicle before Deputies arrived for suspected injuries. Burkhart was cited for failure to maintain control, and this accident remains under investigation.  Fayette County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Iowa State Patrol.  The vehicle received minimal damage.
