On July 6, 2026, at approximately 10:31am, the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office received multiple 911 calls of a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of 60th Street and Y Avenue, approximately two miles north of Oran. After further investigation, it was determined that Kayla Marie Scheffert, age 34 of Sumner, was east bound on 60th Street in a White 2023 Toyota Camry SE when Britney Ann Lawrence, age 35 of Eau Claire, WI, was northbound on Y Avenue and failed to yield at the intersection in a Maroon 2013 Kia Sorento and “t-boned” Scheffert. Both vehicles rolled into the northeast ditch and are considered a total loss. Scheffert was trapped in the Toyota and was mechanically extracted. Scheffert received serious injuries. Scheffert sought medical treatment by personal vehicle. Lawrence was temporarily trapped in the Kia and was extracted with assistance. Lawrence received serious injuries and was transported to the Sumner Hospital. Lawrence was issued a citation for failure to obey stop sign and yield right of way. The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Oran Fire Department, Oran First Responders, Fairbank Ambulance, Mercy One Ambulance, Bremer County Sheriff’s Office, Bremer County Emergency Management, and Iowa State Patrol.

On July 6th, a Fayette County Deputy arrested Nicholas Snyder, age 48 of Washburn, on a valid Fayette County arrest warrant for failure to appear. Snyder was transported to the Fayette County Jail where he was held on a 4,000 cash only bond. The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Office.
