Volga River State Recreation Area Spring Forestry Field Day will be held on May 28

FAYETTE, Iowa - The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is hosting a spring forestry field day on May 28 at Volga River State Recreation Area, 10225 Ivy Road, near Fayette, for Iowans looking to improve their forest wildlife habitat. There is no cost to attend. RSVP by May 26 to zach.nie@dnr.iowa.gov or 515-805-6276

The field day begins day noon with event registration at the overlook, west of the horse campground. Transportation from the overlook to the session sites will be arranged. Each session will involve some walking so attendees should wear appropriate footwear in case of mud (i.e. waterproof hiking shoes/boots).

Lunch is not provided, so attendees are encouraged to bring their own lunch, snacks, and beverage.

12:30 p.m., Early Succession Habitat – Aspen Cut (Zach Nie)

1 p.m., Field Conversion Tree Planting (Maison Hubrig)

1:30 p.m., Travel to Site

2 p.m., 2026 Clear Cut (Maison Hubrig)

 2:30 p.m., 2002 Clear Cut and Crop Tree Release (Zach Nie)

3 p.m., Grant Funding Opportunities

3:30 p.m., End

The day’s objective is to provide landowners with practical management knowledge and introduce a significant grant opportunity for creating this vital habitat on private land. Instructors are Maison Hubrig, District Forester from Decorah, with the Iowa DNR and Zach Nie, Forest Wildlife Specialist, Iowa DNR & Ruffed Grouse Society.
