Clayton County Scam Alert
The Clayton County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents, businesses, and local government employees to be aware of fraudulent emails and messages requesting the purchase of gift cards or other items.
Scammers are creating fake email accounts or placing phone calls and pretending to be local officials, supervisors, or department leaders in an attempt to trick individuals into making purchases or sending money.
Warning signs may include:
-Requests to purchase gift cards or prepaid cards
-Urgent messages demanding immediate action
-Requests to keep the purchase confidential
-Email addresses that look similar but are not legitimate
-Requests to send payment through gift card codes or electronic transfers
If you receive one of these emails or messages:
-Do not respond
-Do not purchase anything
-Verify the request by calling the person directly using a trusted phone number
-Report suspicious activity immediately
These scams are increasing and are targeting local communities across Iowa. Please share this information to help protect others.
