Parasite Patrol Helps Sheep and Goat Producers Improve Parasite Monitoring and Management
Sheep and goats across Iowa and Wisconsin face a microscopic threat with monumental health concerns. Internal parasites of sheep and goats decrease production and animal health and can also cause death. Meanwhile, the dewormers used over the past 60 years have become less effective.
The Parasite Patrol and Parasite Patrol Plus programs provide producers with practical tools and science-based recommendations to better understand the parasites, integrated parasite management strategies, and fecal egg counting (FEC) and FAMACHA as measuring and monitoring tools.
The Parasite Patrol program is an in-depth educational program combined with hands-on training for performing fecal egg counts.
The Parasite Patrol Plus program includes the in-depth educational program, hands-on training for performing fecal egg counts, and FAMACHA certification.
These programs are designed for sheep and goat producers, but anyone interested in understanding internal small ruminant parasites, monitoring strategies, and management are encouraged to attend.
The Parasite Patrol and Parasite Patrol Plus programs will be offered at several locations across Iowa. Select locations will be offering the Parasite Patrol Plus program. 4-H Youth Are Beyond Ready
From fairgrounds to classrooms, community gardens to robotics labs, 4-H youth are proving they are not just ready for the future—they’re Beyond Ready.
The new 4-H year began September 1, and returning 4-H members are encouraged to complete their enrollment for the upcoming year. Fall is also an ideal time for youth and families to learn more about 4-H and become involved. The 4-H program is open to youth in kindergarten through 12th grade.
Last year, Clayton County was home to 13 community 4-H clubs, with 356 4-H members and 120 Clover Kids participating in local programs and activities.
As America’s largest youth development organization, 4-H empowers nearly 6 million young people nationwide through hands-on learning experiences offered through clubs, camps, school programs, and community events. Through the Beyond Ready initiative, 4-H aims to help prepare 10 million young people for work and life by 2030.
4-H provides youth with opportunities to develop valuable skills such as leadership, communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and responsibility while exploring their interests and making a difference in their communities.
