Oelwein Police Investigate Attempted Armed Robbery and Gunfire in McDonald's Parking Lot

On July 10, 2026, at approximately 9:06 p.m., the Oelwein Police Department received multiple reports of gunshots and a confrontation in the McDonald’s parking lot, located in the 10 block of 1st Avenue SE.
The initial investigation indicates that several individuals had arranged to meet in the parking lot in connection with a proposed sale of property. During the meeting, a male approached a red sport utility vehicle and a confrontation occurred. The male reportedly opened a vehicle door, attempted to pull an occupant from the vehicle, displayed a handgun, and fired at least one round as the vehicle fled the area.
The armed suspect then left the area on foot. No injuries were reported.
Oelwein police officers, assisted by the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office and the Fayette Police Department, immediately searched the surrounding area. Law enforcement personnel used both conventional search methods and unmanned aircraft equipped with thermal imaging equipment. The suspect was not located during the initial search.
Officers identified and interviewed the occupants of the involved vehicle. The vehicle was seized and secured as part of the investigation. This remains an active criminal investigation. No arrests have been announced, and additional information will be released when it can be provided.
