Postconviction Relief for Manchester Man Convicted for Murder Scheduled for April

The postconviction relief trial for a Manchester man charged with murder will be held in
April. 72-year old Jerry L. Burns was convicted for first-degree murder in February of 2020 in connection with the murder of 18-year old Michelle Martinko. Martinko was murdered back on December 19th, 1979 and Burns was charged in 2018 after DNA evidence found at the scene was matched. The Iowa Supreme Court affirmed his conviction back in 2023. Burns is seeking postconviction relief based on what he alleges was ineffective council. The challenge will be heard on April 20th of next year in Linn County Court.
