FAYETTE TAKO HOLDING FISHING EVENT AT THE BIG SPRINGS TROUT HATCHERY ON SATURDAY, JUNE 7th

Kids love to fish, and the annual Iowa DNR free fishing weekend is the first full weekend in June. As in recent years, the Fayette Take A Kid Outdoors (TAKO) chapter is holding a special fishing program. This year it will be held at the popular Big Springs Trout facility north of Elkader. It will run from 10-1 on Saturday, June 7th. Attendees will first meet at the facility office near the ponds. There the Big Springs Manager will share details about trout production and the quality water required for raising them. This is a free event and open to interested families. The address is 16212 Big Springs Rd. Elkader, IA. Their phone number is 563-425-2446.

After the brief program and tour of the trout growing runs, kids are welcome to come to their special children’s pond for a fishing demonstration. Then try their luck at catching one. Families can also fish at the nearby Turkey River, or the other ponds. This is free fishing weekend, so no licenses are needed. Some poles and bait will be provided, or you can bring your own.

A light noon meal will be served along with refreshments. The focus is to introduce fishing to new families and the kids, and to appreciate the high-quality water needed for raising trout. The Big Springs DNR trout facility is fed by the largest cold-water spring in the entire state of Iowa, and raises over 150,000 trout for stocking NE Iowa streams. Fishermen and other folks drive many miles to fish the great trout streams of northeast Iowa.

As in all TAKO events, parents and/or guardians need to stay with the children. For further information on the event, contact TAKO President Leif White at 319-939-1567.
