Traffic Pattern Change on Iowa 9 in Decorah in Place Until September 2nd

DECORAH, Iowa — Aug. 28, 2026 — The next phase of construction is underway on Iowa 9 in Decorah. Traffic has been shifted into a head-to-head traffic pattern on the newly constructed eastbound lanes, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation's New Hampton construction office.

The pavement reconstruction project on Iowa 9 runs from U.S. 52 to Pleasant Avenue. Some of the lane separation devices along the centerline of the head-to-head traffic pattern will need to be reset.

• A pilot car and flaggers will direct traffic through the work zone while crews complete the work.

• The work will be completed Wednesday night, Sept. 2, weather permitting. 

• Temporary lighting will illuminate the flaggers and work area.

The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey the posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles, and wear seat belts.
