(West Union, IA) -- During the week of April 22nd, officials in West Union discovered that the city had fallen victim to a cyber scam, resulting in a loss of over 60-thousand-dollars. The scam involved a fraudulent invoice from what appeared to be a legitimate vendor, which the city paid before realizing the deception. The city has taken steps to address the situation, including filing a claim with insurance to attempt to recover the lost funds. Additionally, they have conducted reviews of city emails and computers with IT professionals and are implementing safeguards to prevent similar incidents in the future. An investigation into the scam is currently underway.
