National Public Health Week occurs each year in early April. This year’s theme — Ready. Set. Action! — calls on each of us to look back at the progress we’ve made and look forward to the steps needed for an even healthier future. Because one truth guides it all: Good health doesn’t just happen.
For more than 150 years, public health has reshaped what’s possible in the United States — adding decades to life expectancy and dramatically improving quality of life. These achievements didn’t happen by accident. Each county in Wisconsin has a local health department that is charged to prevent disease, promote healthy behaviors and protect the community’s safety. Examples of this include ensuring food, water and environments are safe, promoting testing for harmful substances, monitoring and responding to infectious diseases to minimize community spread, and connecting individuals to essential health services. These efforts cannot be completed in isolation and the health department values and relies on partnerships with local organizations, businesses and communities to make our home safe and healthy.
In continuing the public health legacy, the Crawford County Health Department and its partners have officially launched "Southwest 7," a regional environmental health collective. This expanded partnership unites seven southwest Wisconsin health departments—Crawford, Grant, Green, Lafayette, Iowa, Richland, and Vernon—to pool environmental resources, research, and advocacy efforts. While these counties have collaborated in different ways for decades, this new alliance marks their largest regional footprint to date, all dedicated to identifying and mitigating environmental health risks across their communities.
The Southwest 7 partnership reflects our shared commitment to safeguarding the health of our residents. As this work moves forward, Crawford County Health Department looks forward to continued collaboration with our regional partners and local communities to support safe environments and a healthier future for all.
