Crawford County Health Department Prompts Residents to Tip, Toss, and Take Action for a Bite-Free Season
This month, the Crawford County Health Department is joining regional partners to share information on how to protect your family from mosquitoes. As warmer weather continues, mosquitoes are becoming more active across the state, making it important to take simple steps to prevent mosquito bites and reduce breeding areas around your home.
One of the easiest ways to reduce mosquito populations is to Tip, Toss, and Take Action against standing water where mosquitoes lay their eggs. TIP out any standing water, TOSS out unneeded containers that can collect water, and TAKE ACTION by sharing mosquito prevention tips with your family, friends, and community. Even small amounts of standing water can become breeding sites for mosquitoes, including species that can carry diseases such as West Nile virus, Zika virus, and dengue fever.
Mosquito control is a shared responsibility, and everyone can help reduce the risk of mosquito-borne illnesses by taking the following actions:
• Eliminate standing water in clogged rain gutters, rain barrels, discarded tires, buckets, watering troughs or anything that holds water for over a week.
• Ensure that swimming pools, spas, and ponds are properly maintained.
• Change the water in pet dishes, bird baths, and other small containers weekly. • Reach out to your local vector control specialist if chronic mosquito problems arise. • Use Center for Disease Control -recommended insect repellent when outdoors where mosquitoes may be present.
Share mosquito prevention tips with your family, friends, and neighbors. By working together to reduce mosquito breeding sites and protect against mosquito bites, we can help keep our communities healthier all summer long.
