MFL MarMac School Board approves the hiring of Elementary Principal and approves purchase of Commercial Vehicle Group Building

The MFL MarMac School Board approved the hiring of Abbey Cottrell as Elementary Principal. Cottrell is currently the Assisant Elementary Principal. Superintendent Tim Duggar has been serving as K-3 Principal.
Lary Walter resigned as Assistant Baseball Coach and Diane Fisk resigned as High School Musical Director
The Board held a public hearing for the bus garage project but tabled bids until the March 9th meeting.
The Board approved the purchase of the Commercial Vehicle Group Building for 400-thousand dollars, plus half of the asbestos abatement process, for a total of 441-thousand. Clayton County Recycling will demolish and remove the building at no cost to the District. The Board has no plans for the property at this time.

The MFL MarMac Community School District held a Regular Meeting of the Board of Directors on February 9, 2026, in the Monona Schoolhouse.
President, Dr. Jonathon Moser, called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. Members present at roll call were Roberta Hass, Aaron Schroeder, Danielle Schlake, Tonya Meyer, Joshua Grau and Marti Post. Also present were Superintendent, Tim Dugger, Board Secretary, Karla Hanson, and student representative, Mattie Hallberg.
Motion Josh Grau, seconded by Roberta Hass, to approve the agenda as presented. Motion carried unanimously.
Motion by Danielle Schlake, seconded by Tonya Meyer, to approve the consent items from the agenda as follows:
Minutes from January 12, 2026, Regular Meeting
Minutes from February 4, 2026, Closed Session
Bills against the district as listed: General Fund: $202,071.00, Food Service: $28,632.98, Activity Fund: $48,712.69, Capital Projects: $5,735.46, PPEL: 82,970.13, Preschool: $930.00, Little Bulldogs: $4,308.24, Dr. Smith: $6,493.89
Motion carried unanimously.

Dr. Moser opened the public hearing for the bus garage project at 6:01. Discussion followed regarding the size of the buildings, the lifts, the pit, benefits of keeping buses inside, materials to be used in construction, insurance, etc. Motion by Roberta Hass at 6:22 to close the public hearing, seconded by Tonya Meyer. Motion carried unanimously.
Motion by Danielle Schlake, seconded by Marti Post, to table the bus garage project bids until March 9 Board Meeting. Motion carried unanimously.
Motion by Danielle Schlake, seconded by Roberta Hass, to have budget hearings on March 31, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. and April 13, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. Motion carried unanimously.
Motion by Roberta Hass, seconded by Josh Grau, to move the following Board Policies with suggested revisions to second reading next month: 601.2 School Day, 602.1 Curriculum Development, 602.2 Curriculum Implementation, 602.3 Curriculum Evaluation, 602.4 Pilot-Experimental-Innovative Projects, 602.3 Summer School Instruction, 603.3 Special Education, 603.6 Physical Education, 603.7 Career Education, 603.8 Teaching About Religion, 603.8R1 Teaching About Religion Regulation-Religious Holidays, 603.9 Academic Freedom, 603.9R1 Teaching Controversial Issues, 603.10 Global Education, 603.11 Citizenship, 603.12 Post- secondary Counseling, 604.1 Private Instruction, 604.2 Individualized Instruction, 604.3 Program for Talented and Gifted Students, 604.4 Program for At-Risk Students. Motion carried unanimously.
Motion by Aaron Schroeder, seconded by Danielle Schlake, to approve the 2nd reading of the following Board Policies with recommended changes: 208.R1 Board Committees Regulation, 401.01 Equal Employment Opportunity, 507.3 Communicable Diseases – Students, 507.4 Student Illness or Injury at School, 507.5 Emergency Plans and Drills, 507.6 Student Insurance, 507.7 Custody and Parental Rights, 507.8 Student Special Health Services, 507.8R1 Special Health Services Regulation, 508.1 Class or Student Group Gifts, 508.2 Open Night. Motion carried unanimously.
Motion by Roberta Hass, seconded by Danielle Schlake, to approve increasing classroom rent payment to Little Bulldog Childcare to $5,600 per month. Motion carried unanimously.
Motion by Josh Grau, seconded by Aaron Schroeder, to approve the purchase of the Commercial Vehicle Group Building for $400,000, plus half of the asbestos abatement process, for a total of $441,000. Clayton County Recycling will demolish and remove the building at no cost to the district. Purchase should be final within the next two weeks, if the abstract and title opinion are received as expected. Motion carried unanimously.
REPORTS:
Mattie Hallberg, Student Representative, talked about fundraising for a local child fighting cancer, Culver’s Night, and mental health day during ISASP.
Larry Meyer, High School Principal, updated the Board on winter sports, Marion Honor Band, Speech competitions, evaluations and State Show Choir.
Brett Jackson, Middle School Principal, talked about National Theatre for Children Program, Winter FAST benchmarks, skiing for grades 6-8, DC trip planning and 6th grade pizza fundraiser.
Abbey Cottrell, Assistant Elementary Principal reviewed the following elementary activities: FAST testing, Pete the Cat at Luther College, library visits, dental health month, preschool audit updates, grant updates for preschool, anticipating a large group of incoming 4-year-old preschool students next year and LTRS program work continues.
Dr. Moser adjourned the meeting at 7:18 p.m. The next regular meeting will be held on March 9, 2026, in the Monona High School Learning Commons.

The MFL MarMac Community School District held a Closed Session Meeting of the Board of Directors was held on February 4, 2026, in the Monona Schoolhouse.
President, Dr. Jonathon Moser, called the meeting to order at 6:06 p.m. Members present at roll call were Roberta Hass, Aaron Schroeder, Danielle Schlake, Tonya Meyer, Josh Grau and Marti Post. Also present were Superintendent, Tim Dugger, and Board Secretary, Karla Hanson.
Motion by Danielle Schlake, seconded by Aaron Schroeder, to go into closed session per Iowa Code 21.5(1)(i) to discuss the Elementary Principal Applicants. Motion carried unanimously.
At 6:29 Roberta Hass motioned to come out of closed session, motion seconded by Marti Post. Motion carried unanimously.
President Moser adjourned the meeting at 6:30 p.m.
