Monona Police Department Release Details on Juvenile Assault Investigation

PRESS RELEASE — JUVENILE ASSAULT INVESTIGATION

MONONA, IOWA — September 16, 2026

The Monona Police Department has completed an investigation into an assault involving juveniles that occurred on September 11, 2026, near the football field on the MFL MarMac School grounds in Monona.

The investigation began after the department received a report that a juvenile female had been assaulted by multiple male juveniles near the concession stand and pine trees. The victim reported being chased by a group of juveniles before falling to the ground, where she was struck and kicked. She also reported being pushed into nearby trees. Photographs documenting injuries sustained by the victim were subsequently provided to the Monona Police Department.

On September 14, Monona Police conducted follow-up interviews at MFL MarMac with individuals involved in or who witnessed the incident. Based on the information gathered during the investigation, officers determined that one male juvenile was responsible for assaulting the female juvenile and causing bodily injury. Other juveniles were present during the incident; however, officers did not obtain sufficient evidence to establish that they participated in or assisted with the assault.

All juveniles involved in the incident were under 12 years of age. The Monona Police Department consulted with the Clayton County Attorney’s Office regarding the incident. Due to the age of the juvenile involved and the circumstances of the offense, the department was advised that Juvenile Court Services would not pursue a juvenile referral.

Because all individuals directly involved are juveniles, their identities are being withheld.

STATEMENT FROM THE CLAYTON COUNTY ATTORNEY'S OFFICE

Juvenile delinquencies are referred to Juvenile Court Services (JCS), a division of the Iowa Judicial Branch. The County Attorney's office does not control what cases are accepted by JCS. After reaching out to JCS regarding the incident in Monona, this office was told that JCS has no programming for when the child is under the age of 12. That information was relayed to the Monona Police Department. If this office recieves updated or revised information from JCS, it will be sure to notify the Monona Police Department.
