The trial of an Elkport woman charged in connection with a fatal accident in Clayton County is underway. 63-year old Susan J. Steve was originally charged with homocide by vehicle, operating under the influence, serious injury by vehicle, failure to stop in assured clear distance, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. Steve was charged after a fatal October 13th, 2024 accident on Grandview Road near Elkader. 63-year old Randy McMillan of rural Elkader was traveling west in a UTV and attempted to turn into a private drive when his vehicle was struck from behind by a vehicle operated by Steve. Randy McMillan died in the crash and his passenger, 61-year old Mary Ann McMillan, was seriously injured. Jury Selection was completed on Wednesday and the State started to present it’s case on Thursday. The trial is expected to last into next week. Clayton County Attorney Zach Herrmann is being assisted by Assistant Attorney General Israel Kodiaga in the prosecution.
