Decorah man charged with Eluding, then arrested for stealing a coat from the Sheriff's Department Lobby

Incident Details: The Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office attempted to conduct a traffic stop on Old Stage Road, but the driver/vehicle continued for a short distance at a high rate of speed finally stopping at 2518 172nd Ave. Subsequently, the driver, Fredrick Jones was arrested and booked into the Winneshiek County Jail for Aggravated Misdemeanor Driving While Barred and Serious Misdemeanor Eluding. A search warrant for Fredrick Jones vehicle was issued and served.
On May 1, 2026, at 9:15am, Fredrick Jones was released from the Winneshiek County Jail and went to the Sheriff’s Office lobby to speak with deputies. After Jones left the lobby, a call was received from an elderly lady advising she had left her coat in the Sheriff’s Office lobby. The Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office reviewed surveillance video and observed Jones taking the elder lady’s coat that was on a chair. A short time later, Decorah Police Department Officer’s located Jones at Kwik Star on College Drive wearing the coat he stole. Frederick Jones was arrested and transported to the Winneshiek County Jail. Jones was charged with Simple Misdemeanor Theft 5th Degree. The stolen coat was returned to the owner.
