Decorah man faces charges after leading Authorities on a nearly 18-mile motorcycle chase

On April 13th, 2026, at approximately 6:29 PM, a Fayette county Deputy observed a motorcycle traveling at a high rate of speed on Lincoln Road near the intersection with S Industrial Pkwy, West Union, IA. The Deputy initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle, to which the vehicle attempted to elude law enforcement. After an approximate 17.7-mile chase, the pursuit was safely ended at the intersection of Maryville St. & Main St., Calmar, IA. The driver, Nipun Yonjan (age 22) of Decorah, IA was placed under arrest for the following violations Eluding – 25 miles over limit (D Felony), Reckless Driving (Simple Misdemeanor), No Proof of Financial Liability (Simple Misdemeanor), Speeding – 55mph or under zone – 21 mph + Over (Simple Misdemeanor). Nipun was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Fayette County Jail where he was held until his initial appearance. Fayette County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa State Patrol, West Union Police Department, and Don’s Towing .
